I've been every moment of my free time trying to get this website up to par. So far, it's progressing nicely I think. My first goal was to just get it up an running to the point where I can post entries and have basic functionality. That's done. Now, it gets kinda fun, cause I'm at the point where I'm just adding functionality.
Last night I added a web service to the site, so I could easily integrate programs with my blog for posting things, etc. Eventually this will lead to me being able to easily add and manage my photos. For now, it means that I could easily import my old MySQL blog entries.
To give you a little history, my old old blog, which I ran all throughout college, was an application written in PHP with a MySQL database backend. This was all hosted on a Linux box of my, residing at ICS, Inc in Ames - my employer at the time.
Eventually (as is my experience with un-attended linux boxes), my server got hacked, and they took my site down. The end of dustyd.net in it's previous state.
So now I'm at the point where I've redone my blog/website using ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL Server, and I must get the entries out of my old system and into the new one. I'm also not hosting my own server anymore, thanks to clever marketing I'm hosted at GoDaddy (hehe.. actually, they have the most disk-space per dollar that I can find anywhere, and my photos take up a TON of space.) Consequently, I can't just write some fancy shmancy query or quick and dirty application to get the data into the SQL server.
That brings us to now, where I've implemented everything as a web service, so my importer can add entries to the live site without me having access to the database. It's a beautiful thing.
And so I bring you the second of MANY old-school entries to come... Note: some of the images that are linked from these entries will be broken until I get the photos up. At that point, I will go back and fix everything..
